A quick review: after 13 years, it's still the most complete title so far. 24 hours full cycle, smart AI, variable weather, a full series story and championships. A true study-case for the modern SIM-racing producers (actually most of them only hot lap simulators) learn how to do the stuff.. Although old GTR2 is still one of the best racing sims out there.GTR2 is based on the 2003/2004 seasons of the FIA GT Championship, and its base content includes 25 cars & 15 track locations used in those seasons. The game has nice graphics, good sounds, handling of cars is very good, precise & intuitive, controller support is good, and there's lots of mod content available.Graphics can be slightly better than rFactor depending on the mod/track used, and replays generally look better than rFactor. The game only requires 512MB of video memory when run on the highest settings, so even if you have an old PC you should be able to get good graphics in this game.Controller support for Xbox360 controller is pretty good, the default controller settings work well, require precise inputs without being frustrating.Gameplay is very good, there's driving school, 24hr races, championships, or you can simply create custom race weekends with cars & track of your choice, being able to restrict AI to use only specific cars instead of allowing all base cars can make races more interesting imo. There's also weather & time change in all tracks, both of which increase the challenge and make races even more interesting.Base content might seem kind of slim with only 25 cars & 15 track locations, but mods more than make up for it. GTR2 has a lot of mod content (not as much as rFactor, though), there's lots of tracks & cars that can be found on the internet, and the large amount of mod content combined with the excellent gameplay can provide lots of replay value.I bought Race 07 before buying GTR 2 thinking Race 07 might be better than GTR 2 because of the larger amount of base content. Race 07 is a great game imo, but I think overall GTR2 is better, better gameplay, better car handling & controller support, more mod content, more replay value. Even if you already have Race 07 GTR2 is still worth buying.GTR2 imo is a must have for fans of sim racing, great gameplay, low price, lots of mods, and it can run fine even on old PCs. Highly recommended.. I like this game. It's like a simulator. Very good for play all times.. I'm trying to think of any cons with GTR2, but I'm struggling:- Yes, the graphics are a tad dated, *but* the game is eleven-and-a-half-years old, so a bit of leeway has to be given there. Plus it means the game can run on pretty much anything remotely modern.- No, this is not as "hardcore ultimate simulation-ness" as the likes of the more modern Project CARS and Assetto Corsa offerings may be, *but* the game is all that more accessible - mainly because it comes with three different handling models depending on your play style. The less "simulation-y" settings don't do the fancy modern tap-brake-to-drift thing, but remain logic-based - obviously a 600 bhp Chrysler Viper race car will do many oversteers if you dump the throttle coming out of a corner, but if you ease off for just a moment, you'll be fine.As for the outright pros, then:- Comes with dynamic transitions between day and night. Want to recreate the 24 Hours of Spa? The game will do that. A night race at Imola, you say? Why not. Again, this is an eleven-and-a-half-year old game.- Comes with dynamic rain. Yes, it's a bit glitchy in the standard game, but there is a way to make it work as intended. Consider for a second that Gran Turismo only got this with 2010's Gran Turismo 5 (and subsequently ditched it again for Sport), Forza Motorsport is still having trouble getting the "dynamic" part to work and Assetto Corsa and rFactor couldn't even be bothered.- The sheer number of cars on track at any point can, on some tracks, exceed 60. Granted, the AI is a bit derpy at times, but *refers to age of game*. Also consider that quite a few modern titles limit themselves at ~30, if that.- Probably the most mods of any PC racing game bar the made-for-mods rFactor. You can literally fill a harddrive with excellent mods from the interwebs, anything from extra tracks like La Sarthe, Nürburgring, Laguna Seca and Suzuka to new cars like 1990's GT1, World Touring Cars, Super GT.. if the track and racing series exists, odds are very much in favor of there being a mod for it. And all this is before we get into how surprisingly easy it is to mess with various aspects of the game using nothing more than Notepad.Much like the rFactor it shares game engine with, this is a masterclass in game design - the base game is up to modern standards as-is (after you install the Ferrari/Porsche fix, that is), but a plethora of user-created content has made it even more of a must-have.. All in all a great game.While it has its flaws, such as a lack of Porsches and Ferraris, as well as the fact it doesn't track time, these can be fixed rather easily with mods and patches.The pros however outweigh the cons marginally. First of all is it's sheer amount of immersion, with features from AI that act a certain way to off-track errors like being unable to wave a green flag until the next lap (formation laps only) For those new to sim-racing there's an extensive tutorial in the form of a driving school, which places you in the driver's seat with lessons such as braking and throttle usage, racing lines, passing, etc. For the pros there's a wealth of configurable options such as assists and AI settings.The physics are fairly good too, especially considering the game's age. Nothing on the level of rFactor 2 or Assetto Corsa but it gets all of the basics to a T. The car list is decent. You have 2 seasons of the FIA GT championship to drive, with all of the tracks, like the dangerous chicanes of Enna Pergusa or the flowing curves of Spa-Franchorchamps. To accommodate those tracks you have cars such as the nimble Lotus Elise and the brutish Viper GTS-R. However, there can always be more, and this is where the game's fantastic mod support comes in. You can drive anything from the entirety of the FIA GT series (97-09), almost every 90s touring car series in one and even a near-seperate game in the form of a historic GT simulator (not to be confused with GT Legends)In conclusion, GTR2 is an excellent game, and the £5 or less is more than worth it, especially for those running low-end PCs as this game's minimum specs are laughable by today's standards.. This was the first ever video game I ever played. I still think that it is great..
